Everything you need to know about the Self/Incarnation system, manufacturing Shells, weaving Crowns, Ascension, and the permanent risk of losing progression in Cycle 5 Shroud of Fear.
Shells & Crowns – The New Face of Progression
In Cycle 5 Shroud of Fear, your character is split into two parts: the Self (your immortal consciousness/soul) and the Incarnation (your current physical body, called a Shell). Skills and progression live in memories that are stored in physical Crowns you slot into either your Self or a Shell.
Players build specialized Shells in the Nursery, store them in the Nest, and use the Ascension protocol + Crown weaving to turn earned XP into permanent power. Lose the wrong Shell at the wrong time and you can lose months of progression forever.
Self vs Incarnation – The Dual Memory System
Self = Your core consciousness (Alt+C menu). Holds exactly 27 permanent memory slots + a “substrate” value that grows with every Ascension. This is what survives between bodies.
Incarnation = Your current Shell (the body you’re flying/mining/fighting in). XP earned while active fills a temporary memory bar. When the bar fills, you gain a new memory in one of the four pathways.
Memories fall into four pathways:
- Logical – Mining, shield recharge
- Reactive – Warp speed, propulsion
- Adaptive – Hull/armor repair, heat capacity
- Sensory – Tracking, rate of fire, gunnery
All Shell Variants
Crowns – Memory Constructs
Crowns are physical items you weave (craft) every ~30 minutes directly from your Self. They contain the memories you choose to pull from your Self’s 27 slots and can be dragged onto your current Shell (or back onto Self) to activate massive stat bonuses.
- Every Shell has exactly 27 Memory Slots on its dedicated Shell Sheet (as shown in-game)
- Crowns are persistent and can be freely moved between your Self and any Shell while you live
- Right-click any Crown to see the exact memories and stats inside
- They are the only way to carry high-tier progression into a new body
- Critical: Any Crowns equipped on a destroyed Shell are lost forever
Memories & The Ascension Protocol
While inside any Shell you earn XP from literally any activity (mining, PvP, warping, etc.). When the bar fills you gain a new memory in one of the four pathways. Higher total XP = higher-tier memories (+5 / +6 / +7 etc.).
To make progress permanent:
- Find a nearby Refuge
- Open Ascension (it costs nothing but resets your current Shell’s XP to zero)
- Choose which memories to transfer to your Self (min-max by deleting low-value ones first)
- Your Self’s substrate increases and the chosen memories become permanent
Pro tip: Ascension on an advanced Shell (Reaping/Aggressive/Rugged) destroys that Shell. Always swap to a Blank Shell first if you want to keep the body.
The Nursery – Manufacturing Shells
Shells are produced in the specialized Nursery facility using Program Frames (looted from caches) + specific rift materials. Production still works like normal industry jobs. Recipes were updated in Cycle 5 — farm old rifts for Salt and young/micro rifts for Brine/Still Kernels.
- Aggressive Shell
- Reaping Shell
- Rugged Shell
- Blank & Ancient Shells
The Nest – Storage & Body Swapping
Finished Shells are stored in the Nest. Sedate → move → raise/activate to swap bodies instantly. Your old Shell is automatically stored. Never sedate a Shell that still has valuable Crowns equipped!
Real Consequence – Losing a Shell
If your current Shell is destroyed, every Crown equipped on that body is permanently lost — along with any memories that hadn’t yet been Ascended into your Self.
Your Self (the 27-slot core) and any Crowns safely stored in the Nest survive. This is why smart players weave Crowns often, Ascend regularly, and keep spare Blank Shells ready.
The New Frontier Awaits
Shells and Crowns have turned progression into a tangible, high-stakes industry. Choose your role, craft the perfect body, weave the right Crowns, Ascend often, and protect your Self. The players who master the Nursery, Nest, and Ascension loop will dominate Cycle 5 Shroud of Fear.
